SPRING Performing Arts Festival en Utrecht staan klaar voor de start van de twaalfde editie van het internationale podiumkunstenfestival. Van aanstaande donderdag 23 mei tot en met 1 juni zijn de theaters en straten van de stad het toneel voor theatermakers, choreografen en interdisciplinaire kunstenaars uit binnen- en buitenland. Het SPRING programma zit vol onverwachte artistieke perspectieven die zich verhouden tot de meest urgente zaken van dit moment. Bijna 30 verschillende producties, van meer dan 60 kunstenaars, op 10 locaties door de stad, verwelkomen een publiek van velen: een publiek dat samenkomt, samen kijkt, en samen nadenkt over de wereld om ons heen.
OPENINGSAVOND
Het festival gaat van start op donderdag 23 mei in de Stadsschouwburg Utrecht met een bijzonder programma van twee sterke vrouwelijke makers: Marta Górnicka brengt voor MOTHERS A SONG FOR WARTIME een koor bij elkaar van Oekraïense, Belarussische en Poolse vrouwen: moeders en dochters. Een krachtige, muzikale performance is het resultaat, waarmee wordt gereflecteerd op hoe de Russische imperialistische agressie hun levens heeft beïnvloed.
Eerder op de avond presenteert Mette Ingvartsen de Nederlandse première van haar meest recente werk: in de solo RUSH, gemaakt voor Manon Santkin, vriendin en haar vaste samenwerkingspartner, heractiveert Ingvartsen hoogtepunten uit eerdere werken. Samen zoeken ze naar nieuwe betekenissen en contexten, en reflecteren ze op twintig jaar optreden op podia over de wereld. Hoewel beide producties zeer verschillend in schaal, onderwerp en esthetiek zijn, delen beide makers een zoektocht naar wat algemeen en wat individueel is: hoe individuele biografieën universele onderwerpen kunnen dragen, en hoe universele verhalen zichzelf kunnen actualiseren door middel van individuele verhalen.
Op de openingsavond, maar ook gedurende de rest van het festival, is doorlopend de lichtinstallatie My Light is Your Light van alaa minawi te zien voor de Schouwburg. Opgedragen door de kunstenaar aan alle ontheemden over de hele wereld, zal het ons eraan herinneren, in deze tijd van turbulentie, hoe fragiel vrede is. Daarnaast is gedurende het hele festival ook de video-installatie A City Within a Building van het Center for Spatial Technology i.s.m. Forensic Architecture te zien. Deze presentatie maakt deel uit van To Watch the War, in Solidarity, een serie bescheiden, impromptu tentoonstellingen op initiatief van BAK.
GROTE ZAAL VS. DE BUITENLUCHT
In de 10 dagen die volgen spelen een flink aantal bijzondere producties in de Grote Zaal van de Schouwburg: zo beleeft Thanks for being here van het Vlaamse gezelschap Ontroerend Goed hun Nederlandse première, Een voorstelling over kijken en bekeken worden. NRC, Volkskrant en De Morgen gaven deze voorstelling afgelopen week al vier sterren. NRC noemde het “een voorstelling die publieksvriendelijk is in de breedste zin van het woord. Een zoet cadeautje, elke avond op maat gemaakt voor de toeschouwer. Je kunt haast niet anders dan het glimlachend in ontvangst nemen” en De Volkskrant concludeert: “Ontroerend Goed legt haarfijn de vinger op precies dat leuke van live. Zacht, zonder dwingend gebaar, ontstaat zo een ode aan het bestaan van publiek.”
Hmadcha is de nieuwe voorstelling van Taoufiq Izeddiou, één van de belangrijkste Marokkaanse choreografen van dit moment. Tijdens de onzekere tijd van de pandemie verzamelde deze kunstenaar uit Marrakech een groep dansers om zich heen. Net als in de oude tradities van de soefibroederschap gaan ze op zoek naar ritmes en melodieën om hun angst op een extatische manier weg te dansen en op een rituele manier uit de crisis te herrijzen.
Ook zijn er twee werken te zien waarin nieuwe technologie op eigen wijze een belangrijke rol speelt: Una Isla van het Catalaanse collectief Agrupación Señor Serrano en de Singaporese maker Choy Ka Fai keert terug naar SPRING met Unbearable Darkness.
Naast de grootsheid van de schouwburg presenteert SPRING ook graag diverse interactieve voorstellingen en installaties en werk in de openbare ruimte van de stad. Soms gratis, zoals bij de dansbattle SPRING into the blue met de Utrechtse UC crew, die op het grasveld buiten de schouwburg te zien zijn of de groepsdans The Syncopators van de Noorse choreograaf Ingri Fiksdal die bij de schouwburg maar ook op de Neude te zien is. Soms voor een kleine bijdrage, zoals Breathe van de Finse choreograaf en performer Milla Koistinen, die enorme opblaasbare objecten onderdeel maakt van haar danssolo op het dak van de IKEA in Utrecht.
De installatie Lichtgang van Schweigman& en Johannes Bellinkx, te zien in de pop-up store op Utrecht Centraal, is een zeven minuten durende ervaring die ons laat afvragen of wat we als werkelijkheid beschouwen, wel werkelijkheid is.
SPRING COPRODUCTIONS
Dit jaar is SPRING weer coproducent van een groot aantal producties. Naast de hierboven beschreven MOTHERS A SONG FOR WARTIME, RUSH, Una Isla, zijn ook de voorstellingen All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, Within Cells Interlinked, Lake Life en collection of coproducties. Ook de voorstelling Kono Atari No Dokoka is mede mogelijk gemaakt door SPRING. In dit humoristische en ontroerende werk van Michikazu Matsune en Martine Pisani worden Pisani’s vroege choreografische werken getraceerd en opnieuw geïnterpreteerd door Theo Kooijman - haar levenspartner en performer van haar werk - evenals door Matsune zelf.
De coproductie Haribo Kimchi van Jaha Koo kan door persoonlijke omstandigheden helaas niet spelen tijdens het festival, maar zal later wel via SPRING in Utrecht te zien zijn. Nog twee coproducties van SPRING zijn van DAS Graduate School alumni: jonge, getalenteerde internationale makers die Nederland hun thuis noemen. Leandro Souza (uit São Paulo, Brazilië) presenteert de wereldpremière van zijn afstudeerwerk Musa Insistente en Ainhoa Hernández Escudero (uit Madrid, Spanje) de opvolger van haar afstudeerwerk, (DON’T) LOOK ME IN THE EYES, ook een wereldpremière op het festival.
SPRING ACADEMY
Net als in de afgelopen jaren is er weer een SPRING Academy voor kunstenaars, studenten en anderen uit Nederland en buitenland. Meer dan 200 studenten zullen tijdens het festival in Utrecht verblijven, naar de voorstellingen gaan, en deelnemen aan workshops en gesprekken met de makers van het festival. De Long Table Talks en Topic Talks over thema’s als oorlog, klimaat en dekolonisatie waar het festival zich mee bezig houdt, zijn samen met reading groups met makers van het festival, ook voor de gewone SPRING bezoeker gratis bij te wonen.
TOEGANKELIJKHEID
In 2024 is er een pilot met de stichtingen Theater met Tolk en Komt het Zien! om een gedeelte van het programma d.m.v. audiodescriptie of gebarentolk toegankelijk te maken voor mensen met een visuele en/of auditieve beperking.
Kaartprijzen bij SPRING zijn bewust laag, inclusief voordelige dagtickets en passe-partouts, om zo ook toegankelijk te zijn voor mensen met een kleiner budget. Om die drempel dit jaar verder te verlagen bepaalt het publiek bij de installatie Lichtgang van Boukje Schweigman voor het eerst zelf de prijs van het ticket, via het zogeheten pay-what-you-want principe. Daarnaast zijn de The Syncopators en SPRING into the blue gratis te zien in de openbare ruimte.

SPRING Performing Arts Festival and Utrecht are ready for the start of the twelfth edition of the international performing arts festival. From next Thursday, May 23 to June 1, the city's theaters and streets will be the stage for theater makers, choreographers and interdisciplinary artists from home and abroad. The SPRING program is full of unexpected artistic perspectives that relate to the most urgent issues of the moment. Nearly 30 different productions, by more than 60 artists, at 10 locations throughout the city, welcome an audience of many: an audience that comes together, watches together, and thinks together about the world around us.
OPENING NIGHT
The festival starts on Thursday, May 23 in the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht with a special program by two strong female makers: Marta Górnicka brings together a choir of Ukrainian, Belarusian and Polish women: mothers and daughters for MOTHERS A SONG FOR WARTIME . The result is a powerful musical performance that reflects on how Russian imperialist aggression has affected their lives.
Earlier in the evening, Mette Ingvartsen presents the Dutch premiere of her most recent work: in the solo RUSH , made for Manon Santkin, friend and her regular collaboration partner, Ingvartsen reactivates highlights from previous works. Together they search for new meanings and contexts, and reflect on twenty years of performing on stages around the world.
Although both productions are very different in scale, subject and aesthetic, both makers share a search for what is general and what is individual: how individual biographies can carry universal themes, and how universal stories can actualize themselves through individual stories. On the opening evening, but also during the rest of the festival, the light installation My Light is Your Light by alaa minawi can be seen continuously in front of the Schouwburg. Dedicated by the artist to all displaced people around the world, it will remind us, in this time of turbulence, how fragile peace is.
In addition, the video installation A City Within a Building by the Center for Spatial Technology in collaboration with Forensic Architecture can also be seen throughout the festival. GREAT HALL VS. THE OPEN AIR
In the 10 days that follow, a large number of special productions will play in the Main Hall of the Theater: Thanks for being here by the Flemish company Ontroerend Goed will experience their Dutch premiere, A performance about watching and being watched. Hmadcha is the new performance by Taoufiq Izeddiou , one of the most important Moroccan choreographers of the moment. During the uncertain time of the pandemic, this artist from Marrakech gathered a group of dancers around him. Just like in the ancient traditions of the Sufi brotherhood, they look for rhythms and melodies to dance away their fear in an ecstatic way and to rise from the crisis in a ritual way.
There are also two works on display in which new technology plays an important role in its own way: Una Isla by the Catalan collective Agrupación Se ñ or Serrano and the Singaporean maker Choy Ka Fai returns to SPRING with Unbearable Darkness .
In addition to the grandeur of the theater, SPRING also likes to present various interactive performances and installations and work in the city's public space. Sometimes free, such as the dance battle SPRING into the blue with the Utrecht UC crew , which can be seen on the lawn outside the theater or the group dance The Syncopators by the Norwegian choreographer Ingri Fiksdal, which can be seen at the theater but also on the Neude . Sometimes for a small contribution, such as Breathe by the Finnish choreographer and performer Milla Koistinen, who makes enormous inflatable objects part of her dance solo on the roof of the IKEA in Utrecht.
The installation Lichtgang by Schweigman& and Johannes Bellinkx , on display in the pop-up store at Utrecht Central Station, is a seven-minute experience that makes us wonder whether what we consider reality is actually reality.
SPRING COPRODUCTIONS
This year SPRING is again co-producer of a large number of productions. In addition to the above-described MOTHERS A SONG FOR WARTIME, RUSH, Una Isla, the performances are All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, Within Cells Interlinked, Lake Life and collection of co-productions . The performance Kono Atari No Dokoka is also made possible by SPRING. In this humorous and moving work by Michikazu Matsune and Martine Pisani, Pisani's early choreographic works are traced and reinterpreted by Theo Kooijman - her life partner and performer of her work - as well as by Matsune himself.
Jaha Koo 's co-production Haribo Kimchi unfortunately cannot play during the festival due to personal circumstances, but will be shown later via SPRING in Utrecht.
Two more SPRING co-productions are by DAS Graduate School alumni: young, talented international makers who call the Netherlands their home. Leandro Souza (from São Paulo, Brazil) presents the world premiere of his graduation work Musa Insistente and Ainhoa Hernández Escudero (from Madrid, Spain) the successor to her graduation work, (DON'T) LOOK ME IN THE EYES , also a world premiere at the festival.
SPRING ACADEMY
As in recent years, there is again a SPRING Academy for artists, students and others from the Netherlands and abroad. More than 200 students will stay in Utrecht during the festival, go to the performances, and participate in workshops and conversations with the makers of the festival. The Long Table Talks and Topic Talks on themes such as war, climate and decolonization that the festival is concerned with, together with reading groups with makers of the festival, can also be attended for free for regular SPRING visitors.
ACCESSIBILITY
In 2024 there will be a pilot with the Theater met Tolk and Komt het Zien! foundations. to make part of the program accessible to people with a visual and/or hearing impairment by means of audio description or sign language interpreter.
Ticket prices at SPRING are deliberately low, including affordable day tickets and passe-partouts, so as to be accessible to people with a smaller budget. To further lower that threshold this year, the audience at Boukje Schweigman's Lichtgang installation will determine the price of the ticket for the first time, via the so-called pay-what-you-want principle.
